The Risk of Living Longer - S03 E01: Treating Today's Metabolic Health Crisis

Event information

27 March 2025

Online

This event will run from 11:00 to 12:00.

John Schoonbee, Global Chief Medical Officer at Swiss Re, joins us again for a deep dive into metabolic health. Arguably the biggest health catastrophe affecting us, which could have the biggest impact to improve longevity.

You can think of your metabolism as your energy management system, an intricate network of signals and microscopic energy pipelines. Keeping it in equilibrium is fundamental to healthy ageing. But imbalances can lead to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and dementia - in fact metabolic ill-health is associated with just about every non-communicable disease, including mental health.

In this webinar, John helps us understand the extent and causes of today’s crisis, the role that weight loss drugs can play in tackling this problem and the importance of lifestyle changes, especially nutrition. As ever, we aim to tease out possible emerging trends that could influence actuarial assumptions over the next 20 years or so.
